Ghanaian scholar Mivheal Teye Tetteh has reached another significant academic milestone, earning induction into the esteemed Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. The recognition, conferred on April 25, places him among an elite group of distinguished individuals, including Nobel Laureate, Jimmy Carter and Pulitzer Prize winner, Matthew Desmond.
Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is regarded as the oldest and one of the most selective interdisciplinary honour societies in the United States. It celebrates outstanding academic achievement across all fields, admitting only students who demonstrate exceptional intellectual ability, discipline, and commitment to scholarship.
Mivheal’s induction is particularly remarkable given the rigorous eligibility requirements. Membership is strictly by invitation and nomination through a university chapter, making it a highly competitive distinction. To qualify, students must meet stringent academic benchmarks across different levels. For undergraduate students, juniors are required to have completed a minimum of 72 semester hours (or 108 quarter hours) while ranking in the top 7.5 percent of their class, while seniors must have completed at least 90 semester hours (or 135 quarter hours) and rank within the top 10 percent.

For graduate and professional students, the standard is equally demanding. Eligible candidates must have completed at least 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) at their institution and rank within the top 10 percent of their class. It is within this highly competitive graduate category that Mivheal distinguished himself, meeting the criteria through sustained academic excellence and consistent high performance.
Meeting these KAPPA requirements is widely regarded as a major academic feat, as it demands not only consistent academic excellence but also sustained performance over time. Tetteh’s ability to satisfy these criteria underscores his dedication, resilience, and intellectual discipline throughout his academic journey.
Reflecting on the honour, Tetteh expressed both humility and ambition, noting that the recognition goes beyond grades to represent a deep commitment to learning and impact. Guided by the society’s motto, “Let the love of learning rule humanity,” he sees this milestone as both a validation of his efforts and a call to further excellence.
He also acknowledged the influence of mentors, particularly Dr Hazel Hooker, whose insight on adaptability and excellence has shaped his approach to growth and learning. According to Tetteh, embracing change while maintaining high standards has been key to his academic success.
As he joins this distinguished network of scholars, Tetteh remains focused on contributing meaningfully to his field while continuing to learn from some of the brightest minds across disciplines. His journey, marked by determination and vision, reflects the promise of a scholar committed not only to personal achievement but also to broader societal impact.
Indeed, for Mivheal Teye Tetteh, the dream continues, and so does the pursuit of excellence.
